Talent is a given, but reaching your vocal potential requires work, discipline and regular study. Though I am versed in the latest scientific advances and trends in vocal pedagogy, my pedagogical method is still based on the Lamperti bel canto techniques of balanced registration. This is applied to the vocal style the student wishes to perform. My students work in all areas of the industry: classical, music theater, jazz, cabaret, and pop.

To sing well, a singer must know how to play their body on command. Balancing breath management with resonance usage, and making necessary adjustments in registration produces the desired vocal sound. As a teacher, my goal is to provide every singer with the proper tools for producing the desired sound in the healthiest way possible. The constant is always breath balanced against the resonance usage. When your breath is freed correctly, you are free to communicate efficiently in song.

All new students are evaluated to determine their current level of ability, correct vocal classification, current and potential range, and preferred learning modalities. All areas of voice performance are addressed including breath management, registration, resonance, vocal health, repertoire suggestions, diction, and performance preparation. Basic musicianship is addressed if needed. This includes how to read a musically notated vocal line, understanding time signatures and rhythm, understanding the differences in style, learning how to inform a lyric, mic techniques (where applicable), and suggestions for appropriate repertoire.

Though most of my students see immediate improvement, learning to master your voice is a journey that stretches over the course of your entire career. It boils down to "practice, practice, practice" which includes performing along the way. I look forward to helping you on your vocal journey.

I have been teaching voice and actively performing for over twenty-five years. I teach individuals and groups, and have conducted college and church choirs, and taught courses in Vocal Pedagogy and Singer's diction (English, Italian, French and German). To greater understand how body functioning can improve the voice and reduce tension, I study and teach "Body Work." And believing that communcation of dramatic ideas is at the core of any successful performance, I have also studied acting, movement and performance enhancement techniques.

Each singer is a unique individual. The sound they make and the ideas they communicate are as unique as they are. My job is to help a singer find "their voice" through exercises that accommodate aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. These exercises lead to healthy singing and reduce tension, improve breath management, strengthen the voice, and increase range. I am a proponent of the use of body work to improve mind/body connections. I embrace a wide range of quality repertoire, in many languages and styles. I encourage and assist in my student's selection of a variety of appropriate songs and arias: sacred, secular, and popular. I believe that for a singer to reach their highest potential they must feel safe, secure, and valued. The best performances come from knowing what you do well, while continuing to strengthen weaknesses.

Expertise/Specialty: I give my students a solid technical foundation and they soon realize that their vocal potential is greater then they thought, and they are able to sing music that they could not sing before. My students are able to see results within the first three lessons.
Musical Styles Taught: Classical, Musical Theatre, Pop, Rock, Other
Education: A Magna Cum Laude graduate , I recieved a Bachelor of Music (voice major/opera minor) and a Master of Music dergees from The University of Michigan School of Music in Ann Harbor, Michigan. I continued my voice studies: in the Swedish/ Italian School of Singing, repertoire coaching, foreign language and diction study, acting and dance training in the United States and in Europe.

I am a voice teacher and performer living in Manhattan. As an experienced teacher, I have always suggested to my students, that through the comprehensive private vocal training with me, they will discover their own voice type and be able to use their voices to express the style of music that they love and that they feel vocally comfortable doing it. My technique is based on the Swedish/ Italian School of Singing. A very important part of the lesson time is also given to thorough musical preperation for auditions and performances, dramatic interpretation of the music, diction and language skills, and the understanding and the use of the unification of the voice, mind, and body. I have successfully taught injured voices, and I have taught all voice types, beginners to professionals from age 12 on. I believe that if a student has one particular problem that is keeping the voice from functioning in a healthy and efficient manner such as, bad breathe management in singing or how to sing dramatically with out pushing, this problem should be addressed in the lesson immediately. My students never leave my studio vocally strained, vocally tired, stressed or physcologically defeated and I guarantee that there will be a significant improvement in a student's understanding of singing immediately.

My students have performed in the following Concert Halls: Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Concert Halls (Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall), Merkin Hall, Circle in The Square Theater School, etc....... Musicals: Theaters des Westens, Berlin/Cabaret, Williams Center in Lynhurst, NJ/ Broadway Bound Organization for the exceptionally talented young performing artist, Broadway Theaters and National Tours......Opera Houses: Berlin, Saarbrucken, Bielefeld, Kiel, Conneticut Opera, Boston Opera, Washington Opera, Metropolitan Opera Studio, New Opera Festival of Rome in association with Festival d'Roma......Festivals , Orchestras, Competitions, and Television: Michael Jackson Concert on CBS (Nov, 2001), Variety-The Children's Charity Telethon on Pax TV. My studio is located near Lincoln Center and is convenient to all means of transportation.

Alice Smith, a student of mine since 2001, was nominated for a Grammy Award this season: her current CD on the SONY-EPIC label is "For Lovers, Dreamers & Me".
