Hello! My name is Sara, and I am happy to be a part of your musical journey. I believe singing should be easy on the body and spirit. Singing that feels good, sounds good; it is free, powerful, playful, and resonant. My goal as a voice teacher is to guide the student in the study of voice technique and application, while creating lessons that are fun, interesting, and helpful. Voice lessons are conducted in a warm, caring environment in which the individual is encouraged to explore and develop her true singing voice, regardless of age or previous experience. Lessons will begin with a warm-up that is tailored to the student, and we will move on to the application of technique by singing material that the student connects with!
Concepts that will be explored include: breath; posture; tone; pitch; placement; core stability; vocal control; and vocal health. The anatomy of the vocal apparatus and the best ways to maintain vocal health are often discussed, and the integration of breathing and relaxation techniques will be an important avenue for accessing vocal health and a clear, supported tone. Students will also work on selecting material that showcases their particular voice. While every individual will be asked to experiment with different genres, one of the great benefits of well-guided voice lessons is that the student will emerge with a strong idea of what kinds of songs work for him. In addition to well-chosen material, voice lessons will involve the exploration of phrasing, delivery and interpretation of lyrics.
Finally, basic musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, song structure, and piano accompaniment will be explored so that students can learn to communicate with an accompanist during auditions and performances.

Christie has been teaching voice for over forty years. She actively performed for thirty-eight years. She teaches individuals as well as groups. She has conducted college and church choirs. She has taught courses in Vocal Pedagogy and teaches courses in Diction for both Singers and Actors. To greater understand how body functioning can improve the voice and reduce tension, Christie studies and teaches "Body Work." Believing that communication of dramatic ideas is at the core of any successful performance, she has also studied acting, movement and performance enhancement techniques.
Each singer is a unique individual. The sound they make and the ideas they communicate are as unique as they are. My job is to help a singer find "their voice" through exercises that accommodate aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. These exercises lead to healthy singing and reduce tension, improve breath management, strengthen the voice, and increase range. I am a proponent of the use of body work to improve mind/body connections. I embrace a wide range of quality repertoire in many languages and styles. I encourage and assist in my student's selection of a variety of appropriate arias and songs: sacred, secular, and popular. I believe that for a singer to reach their highest potential they must feel safe, secure, and valued. The best performances come from knowing what you do well, while continuing to strengthen weaknesses.

In addition to being a perfomer, I am also a vocal teacher offering voice lessons for Opera, classical songs, show tunes, and choral music. Will teach in homes near Rahway, NJ or at Shelter Studios in Manhattan. As a teacher my philosophy of teaching is to instruct in a positive manner which makes my students feel at ease during their lessons. I focus on what the students strengths are, and work on things that need to be addressed in a positive way. I teach students of all levels and abilities, because I sincerely believe that the purpose of taking lessons is for the enjoyment of it. Every student has a different set of goals when studying, and I am here to help them achieve those goals. What makes a good teacher is a teacher who is positive, uplifting, does not put students down, and who will make students want to keep coming back and learning more. I have learned to incoorporate those qualities into my teaching. Any time that I have gone to various teachers who teach in a positive way, I feel inspired by that teacher. It is my job to inspire students, because I want students to be turned on to music versus turned off to it. Music is a wonderful gift that the world needs, so I am here to help people enjoy it.
